Newly Appointed Sen. Butler Will Not Seek Election
(Washington, DC) - Newly appointed California Democratic Sen. Laphonza Butler announced Thursday she will not seek election to a full term in 2024, avoiding what would have been a costly and bruising race for the seat held for three decades by the late Dianne Feinstein. Butler became only the third Black female senator in history, and the first openly LGBTQ+ senator from California.
